Although this article in GQ Magazine (featuring Idyoms co-founder Perry Walters) focuses on the behaviours of footballing prodigy Mason Greenwood it raises questions about youth development in sport more generally. For all young people (not just those with exceptional talent or public profile) should we be focused more on understanding their behaviours rather than judging their character? Should we encourage them to learn for themselves through guided trial and error or should we teach them how not to make mistakes? Although there may be no black and white answers to these questions, emerging insight on the teenage brain might help us all to reconsider how best to develop young people in sport, helping them to become better people on and off the pitch.
